Contraceptive Options for Adolescents: Addressing Barriers and Myths

Overview

For many adolescents, contraception plays a key role in preventing unintended pregnancies, as well as reducing the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). However, despite the availability of various contraceptive methods, many adolescents face barriers to accessing contraception and are influenced by misconceptions and myths that can prevent them from making informed choices. Addressing these barriers and myths is essential to improving sexual health outcomes for this population. There are several effective contraceptive methods available for adolescents, each with its own set of benefits, risks, and considerations. These options include Intrauterine Devices (IUDs), Hormonal Methods, Birth control pills, Contraceptive Shot, Diaphragm or Cervical Cap. Despite the availability of a variety of contraceptive options, several barriers can prevent adolescents from accessing contraception such as Lack of Access to Health Care, Lack of Education and Knowledge, Pressure from Partners or Family and Misconceptions and Myths about Contraception.
