Overview

After a peaceful respite of more than a year from prominent COVID-19 updates, the virus has reemerged in headlines. On December 19, 2023, the World Health Organization designated the JN.1 variant, a descendant of the BA.2.86 Omicron lineage, as a 'variant of interest.' Despite its rapid spread and a surge in global cases, including in India, the WHO currently assesses the additional public health risk posed by JN.1 as "low" based on available evidence.
