Non-Hormonal Contraception: New Developments and Patient Preferences

Overview

Contraception is a cornerstone of reproductive health. However, approximately 30% of reproductive-age US women who do not desire pregnancy were not using contraception at their last sexual encounter. Individuals who wish to retain their fertility in the future can achieve the highest adherence and efficacy with long-acting, reversible contraceptives (LARCs). However, there is only one, the copper IUD, that is non-hormonal. Apart from IUDs, Oral contraceptives are the preferred choice for birth control/family planning in women as it prevents undesired or unwanted pregnancies. The oral contraceptives available are hormone (steroids) based and may interfere with normal hormonal signaling as they need to be consumed daily.
