Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a hereditary disease characterized by the development of multiple fluid-filled cysts in the kidneys. PKD cysts can alter the shape of the kidney, thereby making them significantly larger. They are different from the benign, simple kidney cysts that develop in the kidneys later in life. Renal failure can cause a significant reduction in kidney function in the majority of cases.
