About 1 in 10 people with type 2 diabetes could have hypothyroidism. In autoimmune type 1 diabetes, the prevalence of hypothyroidism is 25% or more. In type 1 diabetes, screen for hypothyroidism at least once a year, preferably every 6 months.

Autoimmune thyroid disease or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is the most common cause of hypothyroidism across the world; this holds true for type 1 diabetes as well.
